Bristol math rock three-piece Sœur’s (7.5) first set of the weekend was colossal. The harmonies of vocalist/guitarists Tina Maynard and Anya Pulver were hauntingly beautiful, a perfect juxtaposition with their meaty riffs. They flew through old favourites including ‘Fight’ and ‘Slow Days’ and treated us to newer material too. Their latest single, ‘Do What I Want’ sounded huge with the audience singing the words back to the band....
With their third record You Are We, While She Sleeps took the leap from metalcore cult heroes, to mainstream rock heavyweights. Released on their own label, recorded in their own studio - it was an anomaly, an album which had a 50/50 split between extravagant quality, and fascinating back story. Fast forward just under two years later and the steel city maniacs are back with So What?, their fourth effort in a frankly astonishing back catalogue.
2017 has been an incredible year both for us in Noizze and for music in general. This has made the task of whittling down 10 musical highlights of the year incredibly difficult but here they are. To begin, here are 10 honourable mentions (Yes it was THAT difficult):
If you were to make a list of bands that were doing things differently in the current music scene you would be hard pressed to find an artist or band that have carved their own path quite as much as While She Sleeps are doing at the moment. As we see the band in a venue where you don't have a choice but to be shoulder to shoulder in the crowd we see When We Were Wolves, The Family and While She Sleeps destroy this Cardiff audience.
