2018 has felt a little like a game changer. Like something is building and amounting to something. There has been a lot of good music coming out and it feels like a lot better music to come as well. Bands are developing and thriving in a way that can get you excited for music and Metal once again. It's been quite hard to get this list down to 10 but here are my personal picks for the top albums of the year!

Aborted are back! Their music being a powerful part of modern extreme measures of music. Paving the way for a lot of brutality in Death Metal and Death Grind, the band’s signature style isn’t lost on this new album, TerrorVision, which takes its name from a horror-comedy cult classic film from 1986. But despite being part of the bands gore and sense of humour the underlying message isn’t just fun: “a lot of things that have been happening in the...

With some industrial elements, Stillbirth are a Death Metal/Grindcore band from Germany. Annihilation of Mankind marks their fifth studio album since 2015’s Global Error. Despite the raw aggression that tends to accompany many Grindcore acts, and the short song structures that accompany their absolute burst of balls-to-the-wall power; this isn’t the end all formula for these bands. The precision and technical proficiency can take some bands from...

Found within the darker reaches of Technical Metal and perhaps exhibiting elements of Hardcore, Taken by the Tide offer something close to Death Metal or Blackened Death Metal as it takes Tech-Metal or Hardcore just that far. Atmospheric and boasting some evil sounding guttural snarls, Taken by the Tide are rightfully breaking some ground.

The guitar riffs exhibit moments of both groove and Tech-Metal but otherwise, as is certainly evident in th...

See here: for part one (Thursday and Friday) of our Review.

Run by musicians for musicians, TechFest is a living tribute to the survival of accomplished metal music. Its endurance tested by its apparent versatility. Giving a shout out to Tech Metal might feel as if only a few bands would qualify, but year on year, TechFest unleashes hordes of different and out-there bands. The fact that the organiser...

The freshly spawned Danish band Wölfblood, have recently offered us their EP Nightriders. This little send up marks a lot of their point and helps to define them. Their energy is unrestrained at they certainly manage a genre true but unique offering.

Sloppy in outlook but with energy every which way and that. Wölfblood are everything Rock n Roll redefined through speed-like Thrash down to rushed riffs and rough as hell vocals. Guitars and drums oc...

To dub a band as ‘Folk’ actually leaves a lot of room very variation as they combine all other influences with a look to the past instruments and the historic nature of the land. Similarly, Celtic or Viking just denotes lyrical content but style remains drastically different at times. It’s like saying Metal. We have so many subgenres of Metal that to say one band is like another is almost superficial. Kormak the Italian Celtic Folk Metal band hav...

Drowned, the Death/Thrash Metal band, are one of many Metal bands to come out of Brazil. Proving that Metal is very much alive in Brazil, along with bands like Sarcofargo and Sepultura. Though the aforementioned bands have become household names there are still many like Drowned, who are still just beneath the surface. 7th is the appropriately titled 7th album by the band in their over twenty years of extreme Metal.

Drowned make for some fast and...
