MDC - Mein Trumpf | Album Review

November 1, 2017

M.D.C (Millions of Dead Cops) are back after a 13 year hiatus with their latest offering Mein Trumpf. The Texan four piece are known to have an outspoken mind when it comes to equality and racial prejudice among other things and this is no exception. The album starts off with an personal tirade against the current president of the USA; Donald Trump. From comparing his assault on Mexicans to Hitler's war on Jews, to throwing in some "fake news" references; the lyrics in the title track of the album could be considered treasonous if it was not for the USA's first amendment. Set to a backdrop of Led Zepplin inspired licks, the song asks "what the Trumpf is going on?" it's a question that could be said of the whole album.

The quality of the performances clearly show the calibre of everyone involved. However the record holds a lot of chord progression and riffs taken from some of rock and punk's heavy hitters that never sit right on the album. 'Don't Open the Door' sounds like a Vandals track upside down, there's elements of Bad Religion, early Black Sabbath and Dead Kennedys all mixed together throughout other songs on the album. It's unfortunate to say, but the album is not greater than the sum of it's parts.

Potentially down to the production, but the lead singer’s voice never seems to rise above the music played quite as you'd expect. Occasionally the lyrics are so dense, they are compressed into the songs structure and seem like they are read out from an auto-cue in an attempt to fit them all in. Thus devoid of the passion behind their scathing words, this is not meant to be a personal attack on the band, the album sounds like it will be a riot played live.

With that being said, on ‘Born to Die No Trump No KKK’ the singer is on point. It is a perfect end to the album. A mighty rally cry screaming everything that is wrong with Trump's America, the chorus has made it's way into protests across the USA and beyond. M.D.C’s album is best played loud, having a few more catchy songs could have made that message resonate even more.

Score: 6/10
