Swedish Death Candy - Are You Nervous? | Album Review

September 27, 2019

Since their formation in 2014, London based acid rockers Swedish Death Candy have been heavily layering their sounds to create their own works of musical art. Now, following their 2017 self-titled debut, the four-piece are ready to share their sophomore album Are You Nervous?.

Hand selecting the right tones and ideas allows each track to stand out in their own way. The opening track from the new album, ‘Interstellar Love Machine’ wastes no time in demonstrating this. The result is a fine-tuned exploration, taking the listener on an expedition of floating synths and matching vocal appointments.

‘Modern Child’ lures you further into the album, with contagious choruses and fascinating hooks. Here, the quartet establish an abundance of creativity within their song structure, taking unexpected multiple twists and turns during the duration and causing further intrigue for what else is still to come.

Earlier releases taken from the record, including ‘Green’ and ‘A Date With Caligula’ reveal a refined balance of melodic vocals and deviating movements through guitar and drum beats. These new songs are bound to translate brilliantly into the live setting and will get venues of all shapes and sizes vibrating in the best possible way.

‘Space Holiday’ sits neatly in the centre of the 11 tracks, taking on more electronic prowess than previous seen in Swedish Death Candy’s repertoire. Skilfully merging dynamic guitars with sci-fi guidance resulting in a different outcome for the group. It’s an out-of-this-world experience that we can fully get behind.

Electric bass lines shine through during ‘Journey To The 13th Floor’, a track which fluctuates through an interesting stream of conciseness. The lengthy track shows off a bit of everything that Swedish Death Candy have to offer, from psychedelic arrangements to swirling guitars, later morphing into heavier renditions as a result of the varying rhythms they explore.

Thanks to their wide range of influences, it’s understandable to see this release is a juxtaposition of emotion, sound and exploration. This is a journey you will want to get involved with.

Sit back and take in the view of Swedish Death Candy’s second album; a collection of tracks that will make you question, make you spark conversion and make you want to experience it all over again.

Score: 8/10
