Often referred to as one of the most crucial metal bands in the UK, Surrey’s Palm Reader are back with all important details on their fourth record Sleepless and their huge new single 'Hold/Release’.
Their first record to be released via Holy Roar, Sleepless is released October 30th and is to show Palm Reader in a whole new light. Whereas the group have often been compared to savage acts such as The Dillinger Escape Plan and Converge, Sleepless is set to showcase a more personal and refined sound, one that’s more articulated whilst still resonating all the intimate and invasive power that made the band so alluring and staggering in the first place. Showcasing this is ‘Hold/Release’, the band’s massive new single and their first taste of the record.
Documenting toxic masculinity and how many men choose not to seek help for mental health issues due to cultural stereotypes, ‘Hold/Release’ explores how such pent up pressure can discharge with catastrophic results. "That attitude can tear people apart" says vocalist Josh Mckeown, "I’ve seen it happen to people. I've been scared of it happening to myself. It’s a subject that I‘ve particularly gravitated towards of late." Inspired by Grayson Perry’s 2016 novel ‘The Descent Of Man’, the track provides a sober yet explosive insight on how such attitudes can be be undoing for many and a stark reminder on how suicide is the leading cause of death for men under 45 within the UK. This message is only further highlighted by the monochrome video which you can check out below.
Forming early last decade and deciding on their name at Hevy Fest 2010, Palm Reader have gone from underdog heroes to scene legends in less than a decade – all without losing a trace of their intricately raw homegrown dynamism. Each record so far has seen the band adding additional nuance into their full bodied sound, ushering in distinguishable new eras with each new release. Whilst it could be said the new chapter of Palm Reader’s career began with their recent show with Glassjaw at the O2 Academy Brixton, Sleepless is set to the record that see’s Palm Reader go onto achieve even bigger feats.
