Following on from her self-released debut EP last year, Muncie Girls’ frontwoman Lande Hekt is returning next year with her first solo full length record. Titled Going To Hell, the record is Hekt’s debut release after signing to independent label Get Better Records.
Released 22nd January 2021, Going To Hell is set to be record of numerous firsts for Hekt. Not only is the record her first solo long play and her first release on the queer-run Get Better, it’s also her first release after coming out as gay. Serving as a chronicle of accepting and embracing one’s own sexuality, Going To Hell is a deeply personal insight into the experience of coming out to the world. "I’m no stranger to queer punk and queer politics,” States Hekt on the subject. “I’ve always taken a special interest for obvious reasons, but this record is important to me because it’s the first time I’m releasing anything as an outwardly gay person.”
Recorded in the Australian Adelaide Hills earlier this year, Going To Hell once again see's Lande Hekt collaborating with Ben David of The Hard Aches. Whilst this isn't the first time David has recorded with Hekt, with the first being her 2019 Gigantic Disappointment EP, the forthcoming record see's Hekt laying down all instrumentation bar from percussion, articulating her experiences both musically and lyrically.
Encapsulating and showcasing the mood of Going To Hell is new single ‘Whiskey’. Showcasing the album’s respective influences that permanent and fragrance the record, the track details Hekt wrestling with her sexuality with frank but poetic honesty. This song is essentially about how there were so many things that didn’t feel right in my life,” says Hekt. “It’s about learning how to come to terms with being gay or, more accurately, realising that pretending you’re not gay can’t go on forever.”
Going To Hell is released 22nd January via Get Better Records. Check out ‘Whiskey’ above and pre-order and pre-save the record here.
