Roughly translating to “take it easy” in Irish Gaelic and taken from their freshly released EP Stimpy – out now via Floodlit Recordings – ‘Tog A Bog E (Top Sixteen)’ sees Cork’s resident skate punks DazGak! taking the adolescent energy of late naughties scrappy post-hardcore and infusing it with the volatility of today’s scene. Now, initially, it’s a great track, one that contains motifs of acts like Title Fight, Former Thieves and even Faraquet. But beneath the surface level, ‘Tog A Bog E’ stands as a pivotal moment for the band, with the track being one of their first songs to feature vocals and a departure from the giddy math rock that defined their first EP.
Thankfully, the madcap energy of that first EP remains here (not too surprising, given that the band features
God Alone’s Jake O’Driscoll), and, if anything, the newfound focus on vocals only adds urgency to their sound. Still, it’s the video for the single that ties it all together. Directed by band photographers Dylan Duncan and Fin Stephenson and looking like it was shot with a 2009 Sony Handycam, the video for ‘Tog A Bog E (Top Sixteen)’ captures the adolescent energy and feel of the track wonderfully.
