Breakfast With Bears – Conversations | EP Review

Conversations, the latest EP from Breakfast With Bears, presents a perfect blend of nostalgia and fresh perspective for fans of emo, indie, and alternative rock.

With an inviting atmosphere built from captivating production and raw emotion, the EP captures the essence of 2010s Tumblr while introducing elements that keep it firmly grounded in the present. The EP opens with ‘Real Talk’, a slow, melodic track that immediately evokes the feeling of early 2000’s emo. The song’s captivating production and strong vocal presence make it feel like an instant classic. The mix is masterfully crafted, with the vocals positioned front and center, giving them a distinct emotional weight that’s hard to ignore. The track brings back memories of oversized hoodies, ripped jeans, and the deeply personal nature of the current wave emo subculture, offering a sense of nostalgia that connects with listeners on a deeper level.

The ever-so slight venomous swagger of ‘Fickle “Friend”‘ takes a noticeable shift, drawing comparisons to PUP, albeit with that classic emo twang that’s synonymous with our national scene. Yet, it’s the vocals that take center stage here, with Zachery Binx opting for a slower melody reminiscent of Patrick Stump’s signature vocal runs. This unexpected turn is just one of the ways the band separates themselves from the rest of the scene. The mix of upbeat, catchy choruses and downbeat, introspective lyrics builds a dynamic tension throughout Conversations, creating an EP that’s as accessible as it is emotionally resonant.

One standout feature throughout the release is how each band member is given their moment to shine, but none more so than the bassist. The band expertly highlights the unique contributions of each instrument, from the intricate bass and guitar pairings to the engaging drum lines that start many of the tracks. This intentional focus on each musician’s role enhances the overall experience, adding depth to every song and making each listen feel fresh.

‘Flight Risk’ is undoubtedly the highlight of Conversations. Combining elements of rock, emo, and indie, this track encapsulates the best of all the genres the band draws from. Its upbeat nature contrasts the usual melancholic themes, offering a rare moment of light in an otherwise emotionally driven EP. The sound has a touch of La Dispute’s introspection but with a more optimistic outlook, showcasing Breakfast With Bears’ ability to retain classic emo vibes while keeping their sound current and engaging.

Ultimately, Conversations is a promising release that’s sure to attract a diverse following. For the elder emos longing for that sense of authenticity and passion, as well as for newcomers searching for something that feels both familiar and innovative, this EP hits the mark. Breakfast With Bears have built a sound that’s as much about reliving the past as it is about stepping into the future, and it’s this blend of old and new that makes Conversations such a captivating listen.
