Bridging an almost 3 year gap between the band third full length and their upcoming fourth LP scheduled for its impending release, the new EP dusts off the cobwebs, and kicks any doubts about the bands ability to evolve hard in the face.
Drug Church have made their mark as a band that actively rejects the thought of being tied down to one specific genre, and their latest record is no different. The new four track EP Tawny exploded into the weekend the right way last Friday, and joins an infamous collection of releases via Pure Noise Records. A stubborn rebellion in a persistent refusal to allow hardcore punk to grow stale – this latest collection of music is fast paced, dynamic and emotive. Featuring two brand new pieces of material alongside the 2020 single ‘Bliss Out’ and a cover of the Arcwelder classic ‘Remember To Forget’, Tawny holds an adventurous rollercoaster from start to finish, an interesting flavour in comparison to previous material.
There are notably less hardcore infused influences displayed on this record, but heavier fans shouldn’t be disheartened. ‘Head-Off’ is the perfect choice of opener, a constantly evolving climax that builds throughout its three minutes of play time. Its guitar tones are thunderous yet clear, and the gruff vocals of Patrick Kindlon sit in the mix perfectly. The band’s sound is just as grunge orientated as ever, but by toning down their heavier influences they have opened the door to a whole new demographic in respect of their fanbase. There’s still a volatile power to every track and Drug Church should be admired for testing the water with their latest venture, leaving listeners clinging on to the edge of their seats while retaining every ounce of their authenticity.
The EP’s title track ‘Tawny’ is beyond a doubt the record’s highlight. Designed for execution in a live setting, fans old and new will no doubt be clamouring to experience its performance live in all its glory. There’s a beautiful poetry almost verging on nihilism within it’s lyrics – a morose tone that could almost go unnoticed within an upbeat composition.
With their latest instalment already receiving much acclaim from listeners and critics alike, it’s plain to see that Drug Church have displayed their versatility as boldly as ever. Scheduled to hit the road with alternative giants Citizen this coming Autumn, its evident that this is a band who have no intention of kicking back on their laurels. As exciting as their latest body of work is, listeners are already begging for more and more material to be revealed. Expectations have been set high from the get go, and we have no doubt that Drug Church have every ability to deliver.
