Enter Shikari, Periphery, Kruelty and More: New Noizze – The 10 Must-Listen Tracks Of The Week

The return of Enter Shikari and lots of musical violence; here's the best singles of this week.

Enter Shikari – (pls) set me on fire

‘(pls) set me on fire’ isn’t just the first single to be taken from the group’s upcoming record. For the band and fans alike, it’s far more than that. The first taste of the band’s new record A Kiss For The Whole World – due for release April 21st via Ambush Reality / SO Recordings – ‘(pls) set me on fire’ is the ushering in of Enter Shikari’s second career arc, one that see’s the band reignited with a newfound sense of passion and urgency. Vibrant with the techniclour energy that has the made so renowned the world over, the track is a flash flood of the synth-led dynamism that characterises their sound, albeit with even more zeal for life now that shadow of covid has receded. Truthfully, it’s the sound of a band that has come to realise just how crucial of a lifeline their work is to themselves and the community they have fostered over the years, and with this as a taster of things to come, A Kiss For The Whole World may be the band’s most passionate and incendiary body of work date. Enter Shikari will be also undertaking a string of residency shows this Spring in celebration of their second arc, see here for details and dates. – Dan Hillier

Regal Cheer – Behavioural Patterns

In the time you read these words about Regal Cheer’s new single ‘Behavioural Patterns; will probably already be over. Clocking in at just over a minute this is a direct rumbling punk song of ‘about the repetition of daily life. Your 9-5 job, your commute’ the daily grind and its frustrations. It will certainly have your head bobbing and singing along with its catchy hooks. Catch the duo next month touring their debut album Cans across the UK which is released February 3rd. – Adam Vallely

Periphery – Wildfire / Zagreus

Ahead of the progressive metal titans first release in four years, Periphery have just dropped two singles filled with over fifteen minutes of techy goodness for our ears to enjoy. The first two songs from Periphery V : Djent is not a Genre are ‘Wildfire’ and ‘Zagreus;. The former is a sumptuous mix of all things Periphery, with chugs, riffs and some great vocal work from Spencer. ‘Zagreus’ (Someone’s been playing Hades) is a heavier proposition lyrically and musically, throwing out some absolutely crushing guitar work and breakdowns. Both are fantastic teasers for the upcoming album, which is out on March 10th. Definitely an early contender for one of the biggest releases of the year. – Chris Earl

Beyond Extinction – Gravedigger (Feat. Patty Kolasa)

Taken from the band’s upcoming EP Nothing More Wretched – a fitting moniker giving the savagery of this – ‘Gravedigger’ is the sound of Beyond Extinction’s continued re-engineering of the national deathcore blueprint. Utterly devoid of the gimmicks plaguing the genre’s soundscape, ‘Gravedigger’ is four and a half minutes of pure and distilled brutality that forgoes forced and shoehorned stratagems in favour of doubling down on the intensity. Whilst we’re seeing an emerging horde of new extreme metal acts in the UK, with tracks like this, Beyond Extinction are truly leading the pack. – Dan Hillier

Fuzzy Heart – Full Of Stars

Full of the kind of nervous and unsteady energy synonymous with acts such as The Weakerthans and The Hold Steady, the latest single from Fuzzy Heart is a classic tale of misguided escapism through indulgence. Sounding somewhat akin to a Jimmy Eat World rattled by one too many pingers and thematically narrating someone entertaining their worst-vices in the only bathroom at a busy house party, ‘Full Of Stars’ is an unsteady and ever-so off-kilter ode to the timeless pastime of seeking well-meant resurgence through chemical escapism through poorly thought out means. Those well-versed in the wordy off-the-cuff DIY indie-rock associated with the likes of Muttering, Cassels and Other Half will find plenty to adore and no-doubt resonate with here. – Dan Hillier

Kruelty – Burn The System

After inciting violence and bloodshed the world over last year, Kruelty are back with a fresh single in the form of ‘Burn The System’. The first track off their upcoming record Untopia – released March 17th – ‘Burn The System’ is further evidence that Kruelty have quintessentially mastered the coalescence of Scandinavian death metal, East Coast hardcore and the kind of Japanese extremity that has long flourished beneath the neon-lit streets of their native Tokyo. Put simply put, if you long for the kind of music engined for full-contact crowdkilling, Kruelty have you covered with this. – Dan Hillier

Graphic Nature – Headstone

The siren-esque sound that goes off during new single ‘Headstone’ is the alarm that Graphic Nature are here to conquer. Nu-Metal influences push through with the additional layers of electronic sounds emanating from behind the chunky riffs. This is a brutal unrelenting track through and through, inclusive of the lyrics which address depression and addiction. Vocalist Harvey and crew are not only here to burst eardrums but to raise awareness about the darker corners of life. This feels like a personal battle against the mind but the quintet are leading the charge with their flag raised high and proud. Their debut album a minding waiting to die will be out February 17th on Rude Records. – Adam Vallely

Dawn Ray’d – Ancient Light

Whilst the folk-marred black metal collective Dawn Ray’d have long been known for their antifascist ideology – one that aims to rally their fans against the powers that be – ‘Ancient Light’ see’s the band looking inwards for a change. Still inherently political at it’s core, the latest single from the trio is a chronicle documenting their collective journey through anarcho-nihilism, musically encapsulating the rage, despair and ultimate acceptance and understanding of the darkness that plagues us both mentally and physically. It’s a grim listen, but one that glistens with quiet splendour and majesty in parts, reflecting the liberation and joy the band have discovered trough their readings and mental journey. – Dan Hillier

Cold Comfort – Cheery Little Guy

How much sound can one person make? Answer is evidently a substantial amount. Ben Forrester A.K.A Cold Comfort has been making a racket since mid 2021 pumping out three EPs and a double single. Kicking off 2023 he has announced ALL POWER NO SOUR due out next month and lead single ‘Cheery Little Guy’ is anything but a positive view on life. Guitars that recall the likes of Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs and vocals reminiscent of the modern post-punk era, this is dirty and cathartic ear worm. Catch Ben live supporting This Will Destroy Your Ears or Colossal Squid in the coming weeks. – Adam Vallely

InTechnicolour – Corner Of Time In The World (Sugar Horse Remix)

Sadly, the stellar south coast crew at Small Pond have announced their label will be no more. However, to go out with a bang they have announced an album full of remixes and covers of InTechnicolour’s Midnight Heavyweight. Letting their friends provide unique takes on the record including some of the best musicians in the U.K underground right now, CLT DRP, Jamie Lenman, Frauds, El Moono and more.
Sugar Horse’s remix of ‘Corner Of Time In The World’ is a eery, noisier, atmospheric version but leaving Tobie’s vocals to shine through and take centre stage. Thank you Small Pond for bringing so many great artists together, you will be missed. – Adam Vallely
