Supergroups, returns and comebacks; it all happened last week. Here's the best singles from last week.
Freaking out?! Everyone should be as a collaboration of some of the UK’s best rock n roll musicians have come together to form Every Hell. Ex-Black Peaks vocalist Will Gardner & OG bassist Andrew Gosden are joined by multi-talented and instrumentalist Evelyn May (who has played with the likes of DVNE, Bossk & Alison Goldfrapp) and producer extraordinaire Mark Roberts on drums. The musical aptitude between the quartet is immediate with this their first single. Barrelling through the first part of the song with QOTSA-esque rhythms and Will adding hip swinging sounds finally bringing his saxophone skills into a project. This is a fun and funky, yet hard hitting and that’s even before the gritty breakdown, with Will leaning into his trademark screams backed by some chaotic, mosh-inducing goodness. – Adam Vallely
After years of anticipation, Gaffa Tape Sandy are finally back, albeit in a more aggressive and dark form. The first track to be taken from the trio’s still to-be-announced new record due next year and their first material since their 2019 effort Family Animal, ‘Split’ sees the Brighton band spitting pure venom against a thorny, rugged and aggressive musical backdrop. Yet, despite its confrontational nature, ‘Split’ is still undeniably a product of Gaffa Tape Sandy and fits comfortably within their discography thus far in thanks to its giddy energy, snappy energy and acidic wit. Those who have seen the band this year alongside the likes Mom Jeans and The Subways or during the festival circuit will surely know how volatile this track this, but for newcomers, ‘Split’ is a fantastic introduction to a band most special. – Dan Hillier
“The Portal has opened, The Darkness is calling. Absolution can only come through loss. A sacrifice must be made. Zetra asks the question. Do you believe enough?” So reads the cryptic-as-ever message on mysterious duo Zetra‘s social media, heralding the release of latest single ‘Sacrifice’ alongside the huge news they’ve signed to metal titans Nuclear Blast. Sonically it pushes their blend of 80s gothica and synth-drenched metal into new realms of esoterica, soaring melodies and anthemic chorus underpinned by pulsing, mechanised drums. The croons of “do you feel my hunger?” in the chorus are a surefire earworm, as is the stunningly-wrought synth work. What a way to end 2023. – Will Marshall
The onset of winter and rise in SAD basically means it’s the perfect time of year for a new Casey song, and ‘Bite Through My Tongue’ doesn’t disappoint. Taken from their upcoming third album How To Disappear releasing in January, it paints a bleak picture of the impact depression can have, written in the wake of the breakdown of vocalist Tom Weaver’s most recent relationship. Dealing broadly with “the extreme apathy and self-destructiveness that arises during a depressive episode; and how that impacts those closest to you,” ‘Bite Through My Tongue is a classic slice of the emotional post-hardcore Casey made their name with, embracing softer alt rock and crooning melody that tugs at the heartstrings and tear ducts. – Will Marshall
It’s been a hot minute since we heard from Video Nasties, but in their first new music since 2021’s ‘Draw the Shades’, we have a taste of what’s to come for the band next year. Written about ” the duality of the haves/have nots, the living and the dead,” it’s a slab of blackened melodeath that locks into a mid-paced groove with thrashing riffs aplenty. Perhaps sonically comparable to early Skeletonwitch, with flourishes of At the Gates, it’s a furious assault on the ears that marks a welcome return from the Liverpudlian metallers. – Will Marshall
Taken from the band’s forthcoming EP Big Man Little Man – released February 9th via Everything Sucks Music – ‘Better Weather Than You’ see’s Regal Cheer doing what they do best; releasing short, snappy, straight to the point bangers. A continuation of the immediate indie punk stylings found within the Brighton duo’s brilliant and criminally undersung debut LP Cans, the track bares further credence to Regal Cheer’s wonderful ability to maximise a modest and minimalist set up to its full effect. They may only be a two-piece, but as ‘Better Weather Than You’ once again witnesses Regal Cheer displaying more energy, heart and noise than bands with double their personal. – Dan Hillier
The latest single to be taken from Cherym’s forthcoming debut LP Take It Or Leave It – released February 16th via Alcopop! Records – ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You’ is a bitter ode to having to let people go delivered with undiluted sweet zest. Much akin to the previous singles courtesy of the Derry band, the track sees Cherym distilling the syrupy goodness that was inherent to the sound of the halcyon days of pop-punk prior to injecting it into a contemporary sound. As existing listeners shall know, Cherym are the sound of gilded millennial nostalgia reinvigorated by the younger generation, and ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You’ is a fizzy and effervescent testament to such a fact. – Dan Hillier
One may not be acquainted with this act, but judging from their trajectory this year alone, it appears all shall be under the spell of Future Magics soon. The follow-up to their debut EP Nonstop Heaven and debut full length And The Infinite Abyss – all released this year – ‘FACE BREAKER’ is a fuzzed-out, and blissed-out encapsulation of Future Magic’s musical spell-craft in alchemising dreampop, shoegaze and grunge. Interjected by trap beats and cloaked in a darkly magic aesthetic, this is a brilliant and contemporary slice of celestial musical heft seemingly crafted by hands beyond our realm. Should one not be familiar with the power of Future Magics and be a fan of acts such as Zetra, Sweet Pill, Puppy and Outlander, then this is a wonderful invitation to soundscapes unknown. – Dan Hillier
Forest City metalcore wouldn’t be quite the same without the addition of Dead Days. Impressing listeners with each release; that remains the case with their newest track ‘Death Song’. It’s a pissed off, three and a half minute metalcore anthem for the people who need it most. Crushing drums pound through every second while guitars riff just as hard. Vocalist Don Tuer, who also lends their voice to the amazing End Us, gives a menacing performance behind the mic on this new single. A showing such as this truly gives the track that angry and vengeful undertone they were going for perfectly. Dead Days continue to set the bar as high as they can for the Forest City and we wouldn’t expect any less from them. – Nathaniel Maure
Pull out the protein powder and the dumbbells because Florida’s own Southpaw have unleashed their newest single ‘Deadweight’ upon us and it’s the perfect track to pair with your gains. Releasing nothing but bangers lately, to say this follows the trend would be hitting the nail on the head. Heavy is an understatement with this one. Opting for quite the beatdown approach, it’s full of stomping drum parts, a heavy yet catchy chug to the string section, and some hard as nails vocals to tie it all together. Florida’s hardcore scene is making its name known and Southpaw are helping that happen with this new single. Paired with a music video shot by the talented Toddi Babu, this track has everything a beatdown/hardcore fan will love. – Nathaniel Maure
Originally from Ireland but now based in Liverpool, A Burial At Sea reflect upon their Gaelic heritage and the folksongs calling from across the Irish Sea with their beautiful new single ‘Páirc béal Uisce’. The first cut to be lifted from the duo’s upcoming record Close To Home – released February 23rd via Pelagic – ‘Páirc béal Uisce’ is a beautiful and touching movement of delicate post rock that radiates both aching longing and ardent optimism in thanks to the tracks swelling progression. A Burial At Sea have been something of a dearly dotted secret in the European post rock scene for quite some time now – with their self-titled 2020 LP being the subject of acclaim the world over – but should this track be an indication of events to come, it does appear that Close To Home is set to be the record that shall lift the band to bonafide legend status within the ever swirling post rock circle. – Dan Hillier
After a busy first year or soplaying across festivals and supporting the likes of Empire State Bastard and Tokky Horror, Brighton electronic noise duo fakeyourdeath continue their attack on the eardrums of the world with their viciously harsh new single. “Born from frustration of feeling powerless in the world today, where bad shit happens all the time and nothing seems to change” is an apt comment on this track from vocalist Candi Underwood. Her pained vocals scream of the disgust towards those in power are layered over drummer Sam Barnes’ hard hitting style alongside jaunting and sometimes haunting feeling electronica. It’s sure to keep listeners uneasy and on edge.- Adam Vallely
Underground ‘supergroup’ trio Tom Lacey (Yards, The Ghost of a Thousand), Gareth Thomas (USA Nails, Eurosuite) and Wayne Adams (Petbrick, Big Lad, all-round top-drawer producer) have announced their follow up to 2020’s Boys due for release February next year. New single ‘Hard-Coded into the Souls of Men’ takes them in a bleaker 80’s goth direction. Dark and synth heavy this is a gloomy outlook on modern times. But this track also has a softness to it, the layers and vocals warming in a way as they glide through, which could be described as comforting destruction. The upcoming album will explore “the idea of technology becoming the guiding light in our lives for better or worse,” and within this first preview you can hear the mix of beauty and darkness entwined. – Adam Vallely
This year the Pennsylvanian duo Joey Valence & Brae joyfully bounced into the Beastie Boys shaped hole in everyone’s lives bringing beats, raps, rhymes, and a damn good time. This new track, a follow up to ‘Punk Tactics’, shows that they aren’t ready to lie down and be labelled a rip off or one-shot, one-time thing. Basically, a chance to stamp their name on a global scene and big up their own talents through a great mix of samples and bars delivered with tongues firmly in cheeks. Buy a ticket to the Joey Valance & Brae hype train because it is well on track to sell out the first class, general seating, the luggage racks and toilet seats in 2024. – Adam Vallely
The third single from next year’s She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She features the ever hauntingly gorgeous vocals of Chelsea Wolfe over an epic backdrop. Opening up with sounds of almost a jazz lounge version of herself, morphing into Radiohead-esque floating sounds. The lyrics explore “living instead of just getting by” as she explains, and as the track rises in intensity ending with simple piano strokes it creates a world of freedom and gentle release. These previews of the incoming album have shown that there is more depth and intricacy to Chelsea Wolfe’s style than we already knew she had. – Adam Vallely
Tectonic in name, tectonic in nature; the new single from Jaguar Throne is enough to crack the crust beneath us. The second single from the group comprised of members of Bossk, Cognizance, Lakes and Gold Key, ‘Tectonic’ is a hulking and hefting primordial of progressive metal delivered with genuine purpose that shows that Jaguar Throne are far more than just a passion project or a sum of their respective parts. Whist it’s undeniable that progressive metal may be an increasingly saturated genre, with their palatable sense of drive and urgency, Jaguar Throne are clearly set to reign over the genre’s masses in due course. – Dan Hillier
There’s been quite the month had for heavy music coming out of London, Ontario so far and that’s not about to end yet. Forest City’s Prosector have stepped up next to unleash their newest heavy hitting single ‘Only In Death’. Deathcore inspiration runs ramped with brutal gutturals spewed left and right from one Steve Errington-Rhodes while guitar duo Justin Shepard and Joe Hawley fill the ears with some magnificent guitar work, not to mention the absolute boom brought forth by bassist Chris Costa and drummer Taylor Parker. This Forest City five piece has been busting their behinds to bring some of London’s heaviest tunes and ‘Only In Death’ is the perfect example of the blood, sweat, and tears they’ve poured into their craft over the last few years. – Nathaniel Maure
Many bands are bringing us back in time a bit with quite the revival of what people refer to as “MySpace era deathcore”. Bands like Angelmaker and Tactosa have made quite the following off such a sound. Heavy//Hitter has officially stepped up with their own spin on said sound. ‘Paved in Blood’ sounds like the love child between Kublai Khan and All Shall Perish and it’s exactly as you’d expect – absolutely bone crushing from start to finish. Deathcore inspired beatdown instrumentals slam through each second while vocalist Austin Hayes pulls off some incredible vocal range which makes it plain as day the influence they were going for. Fans of All Shall Perish, Suicide Silence, and Whitechapel are sure to fall in love with ‘Paved in Blood’ and get the warm and fuzzy nostalgia feeling we all get listening to some old school deathcore. – Nathaniel Maure
