Introducing…SeeYouSpaceCowboy

If you cast your mind back to last month, you may recall a NEWS, story documenting how almost 50 million songs where accidentally deleted from the social media platform MySpace due to a botched server migration. Whilst this may sound trivial, for the alternative scene it was a disaster akin to the destruction of the Library of Alexandria. The popularity of the once great social media behemoth ushered in an age of prosperity for core orientated music and the global alternative scene as a whole. Thousands upon thousands of sacred texts where lost to the passage of time and this pivotal point in time for alternative music was lost to the ages. Despite this, there’s still artists creating art that resonates the fervent creativity and vigorous energy and reminiscent of the MySpace era. One such act that is probing the boundaries of extreme music is San Diego’s SeeYouSpaceCowboy. With a name that should be an easily understood reference for even the most passive of anime fans, whilst the act officially established themselves in 2016, the origin of the chain of events that led to the formation of the band can be traced back to 2010. In what could be stated to be a twist of fate, vocalist Connie Sgarbossa found herself attending a set by Californian post-punk champions Ceremony at the turn of the decade. Whilst Sgarbossa was at least a passing fan of punk at the time, this chance encounter stood as a formal admittance to the underworld of DIY and it’s respective ideology and dogma. It was an introduction to a world of creativity, aggression and sociopolitical progression, three qualities that SeeYouSpaceCowBoy embody within their craft. Since their formation, the group found themselves igniting a firestorm of attention from both their respective local scene and curious pundits and press from more distant lands. Acclaimed for their intimate and sporadicly volcanic live shows, the collective create art that is both simultaneously reminiscent of the aforementioned age of prosperity and contemporarily ingenious. Over the span of a Demo, an EP and a split with Secondgradeknifefight, SeeYouSpaceCowboy had established an unique sound, persona and a righteous mission statement; three qualities a large portion of bands spend their entire careers searching for in vain. SeeYouSpaceCowboy toe the line between hyperactive ultraviolence and poignant politics. Over the course of their content, fully automatic 50. calibre math tinged grindcore is warped and distorted to the point of defilement by obtuse signatures and screeching artefacts, all whilst Sgarbossa wails and bellows like a maddened eldritch horror. However, sporadically and unsystematically, these walls of extremity will break into periods of danceable yet maniacal white belt melodies, with Sgarbossa sardonically and sassily attacking xenophobia. With this in consideration it’s perfectly transparent to understand why the band choose to identify as sasscore. Either way, with the band wonderfully represent LGBTQ+ vales and ethics, SeeYouSpaceCowBoy are the sound of a band choking the life out of the toxicity that remains within the scene with a bloodied studded belt. Understandably, with the band showing such promise, it’s no surprise that the band swiftly became a point of interest for the industry types. With a multitude of labels baying for their signatures, the group choose to align with Pure Noise (Knocked Loose, Year Of The Knife, Terror), a collaboration that accumulated with the label releasing Songs For The Firing Squad, a full length compilation of a selection of the group’s previous material and range of new tracks that indicate the vigour the band are set to display on future releases. With this in mind, SeeYouSpaceCowboy are set for a truly massive things later this year. Next month will see the band embark on a colossal headline run across the states before making their UK debut at Upsurge Festival this August, sharing a stage with the likes of Incendiary, Desolated and Hang The Bastard. With a full length debut promised for the tail end of the year, SeeYouSpaceCowboy are set to be a rallying point for those oppressed due to their identity and a group set to reinvigorate social and audible progression within technicolour extremity. SeeYouSpaceCowboy make their UK debut at Upsurge Festival at the New Cross Inn, London. Check the full lineup and dates below and don’t forget to grab tickets here.
