Ten years of an album is definitely something you should celebrate. In true rock'n roll, that's what Amber Run decided on their sophomore 5am, and what's better than to go on tour, starting with Paris!
Settling into a fine Friday evening at le Café de la Danse, with Belgian artist Berre, the main support for this tour. The young man and his guitarist presented a 30 min-ish of acoustic folk music, sprinkled by a bright smile to go along with it. Songs such as ‘Kissing Strangers’ or ‘Happier’ enlightened the very attentive crowd. It actually was the third time that the singer played in Paris, and he could not deny that the fans were always sweet, before proceeding to perform his very first single, ‘Say My Name’. Highlight of the set was his cover of Freya Ridings, ‘Lost Without You’. This was a true success, but, as Berre amusingly said, not as much as Amber Run!
Amber Run took to the stage with bright smiles, and rightly so. It was set to be a delight to see the band perform 5AM in full, if a tad surreal. Frontman Joshua Keogh recalling that they were only 17–18 years old when they recorded the album, and you could spot the youthful innocence through the songs. Ending the album run through on ‘Shiver’ (never performed live until now), in an almost a cappella way and the beautiful ‘See You Soon’. A wonderful performance of a brilliant album as they move onto some of their older material.
‘What Could be as Lonely as Love’ kicking off the second part of their set. A more melancholic side of the first album slowly disappearing to reveal a heavier guitar led side. The audience thrilled, as they sing along ‘Oh oh oh’ chants echoing in the room.
However leaning more into their melancholic side they also to play the heartbreakers that are ‘Fickle Game’ and ‘Wastelands’ from From A Moment, I Was Lost in front of an eager crowd. Even though they had not returned in 2 years and the reaction was as if they had not been forgotten. ‘No Answers’ and the rawness of its melody that takes the people to their guts ended the show and the band left the stage under a huge ovation…before stepping in again, ‘Obviously, we lied!’
Indeed, they could not leave the stage before playing their ‘most miserable song ever’ which turned out to be ‘Amen’, and got people to tear up a little. And obviously, what Amber Run could be without their most famous track, ‘I Found’. Joe Koegh stood by himself as the song started, before being joined by his bandmates, such a pure bliss. Finally, they played a final rock’n roll song one last time with ‘a really old one’.
The British band left us in full emotion and humility for their solid work. Amber Run surely knows how to put on a show. In Paris, they again managed to combine beautiful features that get us straight to our hearts and guts.
