Sanction – Broken In Refraction | Album Review

Straight out of Long Island, New York, hardcore quintet Sanction have returned with a deep desire for bloodshed. Armed with their full length record Broken In Refraction, they’re bound to get some limbs flying. Since the release of their EP The Infringement of God’s Plan, the five-piece have received great amounts of validation from the bigger names in the current hardcore scene. Stick To Your Guns, Counterparts, Knocked Loose and Terror are just a few bands that have praised the newcomers, as well as the hardcore platform hate5six. Speaking of the record itself, straight after the ominous introduction track ‘…An Empty Thought’, ‘The Final Fraction’ hits like a truck straight to the face. Reminiscent of their peers in Knocked Loose, the band combines harsh dissonant metalcore riffs with some meaty drums. Vocalist David Blom’s growls cut over the tracks like razor blades, especially on the single “Paralysis”, which is arguably the best track on the record. Clocking in at just about 23 minutes, Sanction don’t leave much breathing room in between their cacophony of spicy riffs and chuggy breakdowns. Outside of the occasional haunting sample, such as the one at the end of ‘Radial Lacerations’ – this is a record that assaults you from start to finish. The relentless violence produced by the band can get a bit overwhelming at times, though. Because of this, tracks like ‘Shattering Man’ thankfully offer a newer, fresher taste of hardcore, it’s a welcome change of pace in an album that remains so scarring throughout Despite the quality, questions about the necessity of an album like this could be asked. Sanction don’t offer much to differentiate themselves from their peers in other upcoming hardcore bands. However, they surely do provide some solid hardcore tunes that will cause many men to trade mosh retirement for a lesson in spin kicking. At the end of the day, that might have been their goal. Creatively, it may not be reinventing the wheel, but bones will break. Score: 7/10 Facebook:/sanction631 Twitter: @Sanction631
